Edward James Collins, M.D., FACS

Dr. Edward CollinsI was born in San Francisco, California. I attended Howard University College of Medicine and graduated in 1970 with an M.D. degree. After graduation from medical school, I served an internship at Mt Zion Hospital and Medical Center (now the cancer center of the University of California San Francisco) where I received the Julius Rosenstirn award as the outstanding intern. From 1971 to 1972 I served as a medical resident in the same institution and received the Allan Cohen award as the outstanding medical resident. From 1972 to 1973 I served as a surgical resident at Mt. Zion Hospital.

From 1973 to 1976, I was a resident in Urology at University of California San Francisco under the guidance of Dr. Donald Smith and Dr. Emile Tanagho. Since completing my residency in 1976, I have been continuously in private practice in San Francisco and a, presently a partner and shareholder in Golden Gate Urology. I returned to Mt. Zion hospital in 1976 to practice urology and served as Chief of Urology from 1983-1989. In 1977, I was the recipient of the Golden Bagel award as the outstanding teacher in the department of surgery. Currently I am Assistant Clinical Professor in the department of Urology at the University of California San Francisco. My current principle hospital affiliation is California Pacific Medical Center.

My professional associations include membership in the American Urology Association, American College of Surgeons, National Medical Association, R. Frank Jones Urological Society, San Francisco Medical Society, California Medical Association, and the Western Section of the American Urological Association, the California Urological Association, and the Sinkler Miller Medical Association.

I was a founding member and Director of Education and served on the Board of California Prostate Laser treatment LLC. I am a founding member and currently serve on the Board of the Bay Area Lithotripsy LLC. I am a founding member, CEO, Director of Medical Education and served on the Board of the now defunct Southern California Prostate Laser LLC. I am a consultant for American Medical Systems and serve as a member of the Advisory committee on Prostate Therapies. As a consultant for American Medical Systems, I have performed laser prostatectomy and taught urologists the procedure in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Canada, Guatemala and Spain.

I am a member of International Green Light User Group (IGLU). As a member of this group, I have been a part of the pre market approval study to submit data to the FDA for he HPS and XPS green light laser for approval for use of these lasers on the general public. The IGLU group has published in excess of 8 articles in the international literature and 2 posters at the AUA annual meetings on Greenlight laser use in the treatment on bladder outlet obstruction as a result of prostate enlarement.

I am a founding partner of Golden Gate Urology which is a group of 18 urologists and radiation oncologists whose purpose is to provide high quality urologic and radiation oncology services in the Bay Area.

I am currently a member of the American Urology Association select committee on male circumcision. As a member of this committee, my duties include; performing male circumcision in several of the countries of sub Saharan Africa (SSA), vetting sites invarious countries of SSA to assure their preparedness to accept volunteer urologists to perform male circumcision and serve as a member of the team which presents a program and the annual meeting of the American Urology Association to discuss cultural sensitivity, methods of circumcision and why circumcision is a long term strategy for control of the heterosexual transmission of HIV/AIDS.

I am married to Sylvia Mestayer-Collins and have 3 children and one grandchild. I reside in San Francisco, California.
